RSD Project Work - IT and Internet Consultants, www.rsd.co.uk
I joined RSD from the Wear-IT cluster. As a member of the cluster, RSD was one of the three member companies to offer me a full-time position as their Marketing Manager. My key role was to develop marketing strategies to bring in new business. On joining RSD there were just the three senior partners and myself, when I left to join FT.com the business had grown to 11 people.
Key skills developed whilst at RSD:
  • Self-starter - With no other sales or marketing staff within the company when I first joined I had to just simply get on with the job of developing new business and increasing sales turnover. I was also responsible for developing RSD's web marketing service which at the time was a truly pioneering service that none of our local competitors offered. I also developed the company's print material
  • Marketing management - RSD had no formal marketing plan or budget when I arrived, so I developed a three-year strategic marketing plan and yearly marketing communications plan with a marketing budget which I presented to the directors - I received their full support to implement the plan.
  • Sales - On generating a lead I would often accompany one of the Directors and visit potential clients and assist with delivering a sales presentation to them to help win the contract
  • Man-management - During my second year at RSD I became involved in recruiting additional members to the team, one of which was a marketing assistant who reported to me. She assisted me with the implementation of the day to day tactics of the marketing plan.
  • Internet marketing consultancy - As a result of developing the web marketing arm of RSD, the Directors asked me to deliver web marketing consultancy to clients. This involved communicating with clients and preparing written reports for them recommending suitable strategies to adopt.
  • Account-management - I was often given responsibility for managing a range of client-related projects. I would be the first point of contact for the client and would be responsible for ensuring that clients were kept up-to-date on the developments of their project.
  • Communication - Every month I would have to produce a management report which I would present to the Directors informing them of the effectiveness of the marketing strategies implemented. I also delivered formal business presentations on topics such as 'Developing Internet Strategy' on behalf of RSD and on certain occasions for the UK Business Support Agency - Business Link.
  • Writing - I would write all press releases for the company and I was often approached by the local media to write articles for special features that they were running on e-commerce.

Some examples of projects:

The development of a web-marketing service

  • Carried out a feasibility study for the development of a web marketing service and conducted research on US internet marketing companies
  • Developed the skills and acquired the knowledge to offer web marketing techniques - i.e. search engine strategies, e-mail marketing and banner ad development
  • Launched a new division within RSD called RSD e-Media to focus on Internet Strategy Development

RSD direct-mail campaign

  • Implemented RSD's first ever direct-mail campaign to generate awareness of the company's Internet services
  • Selected and purchased a targeted mailing list of potential business customers
  • Developed the mailer and managed the team responsible for sending out the mailer
  • Came up with the idea of offering a free 'Internet Strategy Manual' (which I wrote) to invite a response to the mailer - potential customers could either phone up to obtain the free manual or download it from our website. This promotional tool proved extremely successful in generating high response rates to the mailer and increasing the sales conversion rate

Developed the proposal that won RSD a major contract with Tyneside Training & Enterprise Council

  • RSD were invited to tender for a contract that involved delivering Internet services to Tyneside based small businesses - I wrote and presented the proposal that won us a six figure monetary contract.
  • I was also responsible for managing the contract and developing the marketing plan to promote the scheme

Internet marketing consultancy

  • Worked on projects that involved delivering internet consultancy to clients
  • My areas of expertise are: Effective site navigation, web marketing strategies (both on and off-line) and content and online-store development.
